Dear Fungus: a Love Poem

Updated: Apr 26, 2019

I love your weird and wild everything.

I love your cups, your clubs, and your corals, Your jelly – and those that are smelly, I love your gills and your frills, Your shapes and your colors, Your eye-popping, jaw-dropping vibrant reds – Hues of purple, pink, teal, and gooey green, Itty bitty yellows and monstrous orange fellows to be seen, I love the way you look, the way you feel, the way you smell. I love the way you inspire so well.

I love to learn from you, and about you – Where do you like to grow? Push through the soil and break through? What substrates you prefer? Wood chips, dog poop, sodden wood – The ground where towering trees once stood? Which trees are you compatible with? How you can make our world a cleaner, safer; How can you help us be better neighbors – To make our earth a healthier home? 🌎

You are bold, stunning, unapologetic. You are brilliant in your resilience, ‘Cause you don’t give up in the face of adversity, And you give me courage to be me, and to be free. You remind me of purpose, And of nature’s vital significance. You remind me how nature keeps me healthy, Keeps me happy, Keeps me infatuated with what I do; And how this is important – For the mushrooms, for me and for you.

I love the way you touch all of us, I love the way you touch me, And I love the way you remind us what splendor is right before us – Should only we choose to see. I love your weird and wild everything.
