Did you know that carnivorous plants grow wild along the Mendocino Coast??
These are “Round-Leaved Sundew” plants (Drosera rotundifolia) and they appear to favor the Mendocino Coast's pygmy forest.
Those gorgeously glossy goo-tipped tentacles are used to trap insects, which can be seen in several of the photos in this collection!
The moist brown blobs, you may wonder?
Well, that tentacle “goo” actually contains a digestive enzyme—so the glossy brown splotches you are seeing are actually insects that have been partially digested and are in the process of breaking down!
We were floored to find these beauties growing a few weeks ago. Many were even blooming! Aren’t they magnificent? We knew immediately that a second visit for photography purposes was a must!
